Google unveils new Nexus 7 - Público.pt

Google on Wednesday introduced a new version of the Nexus 7 tablet, the tablet of their own brand of the American company.

The apparatus has a seven-inch screen (Google market has two models, one also other seven and ten inches) with more resolution than the predecessor and includes a rear chamber, which did not exist in the old model.

tablet incorporates new version of the Android operating system, which was also shown on Wednesday for the first time. One of the novelties of the new version (which can be used by other manufacturers) are the user accounts with restrictions, allowing, for example, that parents can impose limits on what kids can do. Also browser Chrome is replaced by the automatic translation functionality of websites, which already exists in the version of Chrome for computers

The first Nexus was launched a year ago and was in part responsible for popularizing the tablets of smaller dimensions, at a time when the iPad from Apple, with a ten inch screen, was the market standard. This company, however, has also launched the smaller iPad Mini with 7.9-inch.

Both Nexus 7 are manufactured by Taiwanese Asus. The ten-inch version, which Google launched in November, is manufactured by the South Korean Samsung.

tablet will go on sale earlier this month in the U.S. and in the “coming weeks” will reach other markets, including some European countries such as Spain and France. Portugal is not in the list. Last year, the market received the first Portuguese Nexus 7 three months after it has been revealed.

The announcement of the new Nexus 7 was made a day after Apple, the presentation of quarterly results, have reported a slowdown in sales of iPads. Last quarter, we sold 14.6 million of these devices, a decrease compared to 17 million recorded in the same three months of 2012.

According to analyst firm IDC, Apple leads the global market for tablets, with a share of 39.6% in the first quarter of this year. It is followed by Samsung (17.9%), Asus (5.5%), Amazon (3.7%) and Microsoft (1.8%).

Google also showed the Chromecast, a small device that can be connected to a TV and allows you to use this screen to view videos from YouTube or other services (the company demonstrated with Netflix, a video service on-demand popular in the U.S.). The mobile phone, tablet or computer serves as a sort of remote control and video can be displayed on the television while the user performs other tasks such appliances.

Chromecast works with Windows, Mac OS X, Android and iOS.
