Nexus 5 would not be as sweet without the "KitKat" - PC World

Equipped with the latest Android version, device shows the best aspects of the system from Google. There is little reason not to consider him as a candidate for their next smartphone.

Editor’s Note: This is a review of the North American model of the Nexus 5, written by our colleagues TechHive. We will do a new analysis of the smartphone when it is officially launched in the domestic market.

Nexus 5 picks what Google has to offer and the best place in a plastic bag and bland. He gives us the sweet nectar of pure Android, but the features in a generic housing that does not seem to be special. The smartphone is excellent and can easily compete on an equal footing against the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Apple iPhone or the Nokia Lumia, but there are a few things here that have not seen before in other high-end smartphones. If not for the software, the Nexus 5 would be just another Android smartphone.

mundane Hardware

As someone who used an iPhone 5 over the last year, I have to say that using the Nexus 5 is like a breath of fresh air. The 4.95-inch screen with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) is crystal clear, and leaves the 4-inch screen of the iPhone to shame. Text is crisp, eye popping colors and the image is visible even under direct sunlight.

Only there’s a catch: the screen is not very bright. In any brightness level than the maximum, the screen looks dark and dull. Enable automatic adjustment of brightness will help in battery life, but at the same time will make the impact of the screen.

The device looks solid enough to survive a few tumbles height of pocket, but the design does not stand out compared to the HTC One or iPhone. Even the colorful Lumia has more personality, and the color scheme completely black (or predominantly white) Nexus 5 makes it so indistinct as many other Android smartphones.

The housing is made of plastic, and although she did not give the unit the appearance of something cheap, does not seem sophisticated. The buttons on / off and volume, made of ceramic, rattle when you shake the smartphone, and the giant logo “nexus” stamped on the back looks tacky. The Nexus 5 does not collect fingerprints just like the iPhone and the Galaxy S4 5c do, but the rubberized finish attracts dust and crumbs, so be careful where you place the device.

You also need to be careful with the camera lens Nexus 5, which protrudes slightly beyond the rear and prevents the device lies flat on a table. The lens is completely exposed, and I worry that it is the first thing to break if the smartphone decides to take a quick dip toward the sidewalk.

slim profile makes it easy to put the phone in your pocket and hold it with one hand, but had trouble reaching the power button without adjusting the grip. If the button was one or two millimeters lower I would not have to stretch your fingers to either wake up or switch off, and look what I have small hands.

Using the Nexus 5 with one hand was a little difficult, since I could not reach both the notifications panel at the top of the screen and typing with one hand made the unit look unbalanced.

Fast and with good battery life

Although the design of the Nexus 5 is modest, the hardware inside it is the same level as the other top of the line Android can offer. The quad-core processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 running at 2.26GHz is a monster, and coped smoothly with all threw in his way, HD video games like Dead Trigger 2.

Nexus 4 was a very capable smartphone, but warmed only look bad for him. In Nexus 5 played Dead Trigger 2 for over an hour, watched the first half of Pacific Rim and the unit was only slightly warm. And most of the heat because it was held for so long.

As cameras Nokia Lumia 920 and 1020, the 8 MP camera of the Nexus 5 has optical image stabilization (OIS). Even if you have steady hands, this feature will help you make better pictures under low light and avoid videos that appear to have been recorded in a boat at sea.

Nexus family of smartphones are not known for their photographic capabilities, but the Nexus 5 can produce very beautiful images. Under favorable conditions the image quality is equal to that seen in the iPhone 5 or 5s, but you will still have better low light performance with a One HTC or Nokia Lumia 1020. The “Photospheres”, 360-degree panoramic photos are back, but there is a feature to save pictures in slow motion as the iPhone 5s, S4 Galaxy or HTC One

still can not submit the Nexus 5 to a full round of battery testing in our lab, but I got about 7.5 hours of battery life on a single charge, so with Wi-Fi on, screen brightness to maximum and playing very . Your results may vary, but you should get a full day of use of the device. The battery is not removable, so if you want to increase the autonomy you have to use an external battery.

The secret is the software

From the point of view of hardware a Nexus 5 is like a LG G2 with a new pack, battery with lower capacity and lower resolution camera. What makes the device, and the Nexus line usually so noteworthy is the software: 5 Nexus is the first device to run Android 4.4 “KitKat”, the latest version of Google’s operating system.

Even if you are familiar with previous versions of Android, KitKat looks like a whole new world, and is the main reason to buy a Nexus 5. Changes in the visual system to give a modern look and elegant, and features such as search and Google Now are in the foreground.

If you felt jealous of voice commands in Moto X, will be happy to know that the KitKat has a similar feature that lets you edit searches from the home screen, just say “OK Google”. But it is not exactly the same thing, since the smartphone has to be awake and on the home screen, which means that the feature is not so useful when you are driving or hands occupied.

The feature also allows you to give simple commands to the phone, so you can compose emails and text messages, but often need to tap on the screen to complete the task. And still can not use it to turn on or off Wi-Fi

Several changes in

KitKat seem to be part of Google’s effort to encourage people to adopt a social network, the Google+. The most disconcerting of these changes involves removing the app Messages, replaced by Hangouts, which was previously known as Google Talk. Now the app has two functions, serving both for text messages (SMS) and instant messaging (IM).

Combining the two apps is something that makes sense, but the execution leaves something to be desired. When you start typing the name of a person to compose a new message, the results show not only the contacts in your phonebook, but also people on Google+ with the same name. Your contacts will be first on the list, but the recommendations Google+ will confuse people who just want to send a message to a friend, but now has to choose which of the five hundred people called “John” want to talk.

not know any of these people, what they do from my contacts?

Verdict

Nexus 5 is an interesting smartphone with a price ($ 349 in the U.S., the 16 GB model) attractive that will surely influence the choice of many consumers. Although the hardware is not very special, considering the current ecosystem of Android devices, the software will draw attention. The Android 4.4 KitKat represents a significant evolution in operating system from Google, the Nexus 5 and highlights from your competitors. Those looking for an Android smartphone should seriously consider the Nexus 5 as an option.
