[5 Nexus may be the first smartphone with camera MEMS] - Xpert Mobile

After the leak of a log information KitKat Android 4.4, many users did a real investigation and they discovered features of the new Nexus 5. Now research deeper bring a new very interesting information about the smartphone’s camera.

Although recent rumors pointed to a camera of 8 Megapixels without further information, now features new camera can show IMX179 sensor. A quick search shows that this sensor is used by MEMS lenses manufactured by Digital Optics.

lenses MEMS (microelectromechanical) are able to focus 7 times faster than traditional cameras and take pictures in sequence extremely fast, and you can even take several photos of one or more objects before even focus, and then focus on what you want, provided it is not moving very fast, just as you can on a Lytro camera.

This is possible thanks to a technology developed that uses only one moving part electrostatically to focus the picture, while the current technology (Voice Coil Motors) depends on several moving parts that are displaced via magnetism, causing noise, imperfections and lack of precision.

addition to improvements in the photos themselves, the new technology is extremely efficient when it comes to energy consumption. A lens MEMS works with only 1 mW, hundreds of times smaller than the lens VCM.

Check out a video portal Engadget demonstrating the operation of MEMS lens.
